Data source and coverage

Imagery is sourced from the European Space Agency's Copernicus Sentinel-2 constellation under the Copernicus Open Access Licence. ZRO queries the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem API for the most recent cloud-free acquisition at your project coordinates.

Setting up site coordinates

Navigate to your project's Settings tab

Open any project and click Settings in the left navigation. Scroll to the Site location section.

Enter coordinates or use the map picker

Enter a decimal latitude and longitude directly, or click Open map to pin the site on an interactive map. WGS84 decimal degrees are required — for example: Latitude 52.5200, Longitude 13.4050 for central Berlin.

Tip

For site boundaries rather than a single coordinate, enter the centroid of the site footprint. Sentinel-2 imagery at 10m resolution covers approximately 100 m² per pixel — the site footprint affects how much context is visible around the pinpoint.

Load the Site Intelligence module

Navigate to Site Intelligence in the project sidebar. The platform retrieves the most recent cloud-free image for your coordinate and processes it. Initial load takes 15–45 seconds depending on server load and imagery availability.

Reading the NDVI map

NDVI values range from –1 to +1. For construction site monitoring, the useful range is approximately –0.1 to +0.7:

0.60 – 0.70+	Dense vegetation	Undeveloped land or heavily landscaped areas
0.30 – 0.59	Moderate vegetation	Partially cleared or landscaped ground
0.10 – 0.29	Sparse vegetation / scrub	Cleared site, early earthworks
–0.05 – 0.09	Bare soil / concrete / asphalt	Active construction, hardstanding, new concrete
< –0.05	Water, dark roofing, shadows	Wet areas or deep shadow — interpret with care

Note

Low NDVI values across a previously vegetated site between two acquisition dates indicate significant site clearing activity — useful for verifying that enabling works have commenced as scheduled.

Limitations

Limitation	Detail
Cloud cover	Cloudy acquisitions are automatically skipped. In persistently cloudy regions, the most recent clear image may be several weeks old.
Spatial resolution	Individual features smaller than 10m × 10m are not reliably distinguishable. Not suitable for identifying small-scale construction details.
Indoor work	Activities inside buildings or below ground are not detectable.
Night imagery	Sentinel-2 is a daytime passive optical sensor — no night-time imagery.
Real-time data	Imagery is not live. The typical latency between acquisition and availability is 1–2 hours; actual acquisition may be days prior.
